John deere 4020 problems.
Member. Feb 6, 2012. #1. I have a 4020 with powershift that my Dad bought new in 1969. The engine has been rebuilt 1 time. Tractor probably has 10,000 hours on it. The transmission has never been touched. Had another 4020 that also had a power shift with a front end loader. We used this 4020 to clean out our poultry houses and load the litter with.

Start tractor and open supply to driver. If oil flows through driver valve in neutral the valve will have to be converted for use with the 4020 closed center system ...

Good News....the original brake valve was rebuildable. It solved the entire problem and it stops great. No more wheel lock up. The JD 4020 is now ready to go back to work. The 4020 with a gasoline engine was capable of 88 horsepower. This again was seven more than its forerunner, and suffered the same dip in fuel economy. The LP version of the 4020 received an increase in compression to provide over 90 horsepower, an increase of 10. This engine was an improvement in both power and economy.West Central Iowa. If the sump screen was "completely plugged" you need to pull the final drives, repair the brakes and clean the rear end housing out and THEN start to sort out your hydraulic problems. Your problem may be caused by foreign material in the pump stroke control valve & the screen in the stroke control valve housing.
If it's a side console tractor it can be in the PTO valve. 4-Plate on the bottom of the rockshaft housing is cracked or loose. 5-possibly an internal leak in the main pump, but not likely. 40/20vision. New User. Mar 20, 2017. #1. I have a John Deere 4020 Diesel that developed a miss. The first step to cure miss was to remove the pencil injectors and have them tested. All cracked/popped adequately, however, 2 of the injectors test pattern was not real good if pressure was added slowly so I replaced them. This did not cure the miss.Member. Oct 12, 2023. #4. I had a couple broke off of my 4020 and I used JB weld on them. Make sure the surfaces are clean and I roughed them up with some really coarse sandpaper so that the JB weld had something to bite. I have had them on for 6 months and so far so good. C.Went from a quad-range to powershift. When new the 4640 could not do the work of the 4630. After a year we found there was a program to redo the torque capsule in the injection pump. Sorry but I think you'll need to remove RS valve housing to resolve the 3 pt problem. 1st I'll suggest to acquire a 5000# gauge and check stand-by pressure. If stand-by pressure isn't above 1700 psi the priority valve would be blocking pressure oil to 3 pt. Stand-by pressure should be 2250 psi. Sep 29, 2016. #1. Hello, While investigating the cause of poor running issues / top end noise on our 4020 we found significant wear in the valve adjuster / pushrod region on some of the cylinders. Further inspection revealed that the rear facing plug in the rocker arm shaft had shifted, cutting off the oil supply to a good portion of the top end.If it's a side console tractor it can be in the PTO valve. 4-Plate on the bottom of the rockshaft housing is cracked or loose. 5-possibly an internal leak in the main pump, but not likely. 40/20vision. The 4010 and VERY early (IIRC, pre-'65) 4020 tractors DO have a 3rd reverse. The later early models and on only have 2 reverse gears that are sped up. The the early ones, 1st reverse is the same speed as 3rd forward, 2nd reverse is like 5th and 3rd reverse is like 7th. So, 3rd reverse is 12mph. Great for plowing snow. :rock.

The first is that there is a rattling noise that starts shortly after the engine is started and it never quits. I have had this tractor for 4 years and it hasn"t gotton any worse or better. It sounds like it is coming from the front pump area.

On a 4020 when the hitch lever is fully back the raise valve is held open so unless they have an inlet check like later models the hydraulic discharge valves could be the issue.
